As I stood in front of  th' mirror

The beauty of youth to cheer...

A fright'ning image flashing itself,

Thousand paws-shockingly near!

Beneath the face of refin'd fineness

Groans the paining lioness;

Waits and waits the time to come

To shed the pain with sheer madness!

With none to care, her eyes glare,

With light to dread and fear!

Slowly...steadily... gaining might...

Gaining might to stand upright...

Nearer...nearer...nearer...

Left followed by the right.

Behind the mirror-standing still

Staring with hunting skill,

Eyes of fire...lifting paw...

Oh,about to pounce and kill!

Shifting 'way with breathless motion,

Feeling th' rapid palpitation

I locked th' lioness within the cage

Letting to roar with soundless rage.
