With a sigh she turned the page in her book. She read the first sentence on the page before turning the page again. She did this a few more times before she slammed the book shut.
'Ugh, I can't even relax enough to read a book anymore....' she thought to herself.
She switched on her phone to check the time. "11:30 PM" the text on her lock screen taunted her.
'They were supposed to be home by now...'
She shivered at the thought that something might have happened to them.
"They're fine, Chance," she said out loud. "It's not even that late! They probably went for ice cream after the game ended."
That idea seemed to help calm her nerves.
'The Hawks probably won tonight like always,' she stopped thinking out loud and began to ponder their absence in her mind again. 'Of course they did! With Bobb as their quarterback how could they lose?'
She checked her phone again. "11:34"
A thought threw itself into her mind.
She began looking for the remote. There it was, on top of the TV cabinet, taunting her. She grabbed her crutches and hobbled over. She knew she looked extremely short next to the six and a half foot dresser; her five brothers would never let her forget it. As if she had done it a million times, she skillfully used her crutch to push the remote off the dresser and into her hand. After a moment, she was back on the couch, listening to the news channel as she tried to remember the password to access the football game she recorded.
'Man, if only I'd known that I would be at home instead of at the game. Then I wouldn't have wasted my time recording the Gator's game.'
Suddenly, a news alert popped onto the screen.
"Tonight, it appears that a 15 year old girl has committed suicide in her home on Ulysses Dive," the newscaster stated.
'No! Please don't let it be you, Stace!'
"A young girl by the name of Stacy Jackson was found dead in her parents' living room twenty minutes ago."
'No! No! No!' Chance wanted to sob, but the tears would not come.
"A young boy by the name of Kyle Gregory was supposed to take his girlfriend out tonight only to find her lying on the ground. She seems to have overdosed. Officials are investigating now. Back to you in HQ."
"Thanks, Bennett," the feed jumped back to the news HQ. "Now for the weather."
Chance turned off the TV, and switched on her phone. She began to text her dad.
"Daddy, can y'all hurry home? please???" she texted quickly.
"Sorry CJ," her father texted back. "We're over at the Jackson's. Did you hear?"
     "Yes sir."
"Henry is pretty tore up about this. We may need to stay over to take care of the man."
"I understand. Tell Mr. Jackson I'm praying for him. And tell him I'm sorry."
"Thx for understanding. C y ltr. Ttyl. XD. lol."
His last text made her smile despite the circumstances.
     'What a goofball!'
